9th February Off to Kaikoura to see Sea Lions

Before I start on today's travels I have now successfully got a photo of Amy from 2008 at Fox Glacier.

You could walk right up to the edge in 2008.

If you squint you can just about see it!

Anyway last night it was very apt that we stayed where we did as it's 40 years since I started my nurse training.

40 years ago I was moving into Guy's Hospital nurses home! Sadly I'm missing the reunion this Saturday but I hope to meet up with one of the girls who now lives just south of Brisbane when we continue our travels in Oz.

Our drive today was about 4 hours with very little to see or stop for as it's mostly brown hills and valleys. Very different from the rainforests and very green scenery on the west coast. We did stop about half way at Hanmer Springs for our mid morning break. The hot springs are very commercialised so we gave them a miss. We'll dig a hole in Hot Water Beach to find a hot spring to sit in when we're in North Island.

On the outskirts of Kaikoura we stopped for lunch and a bit of a beach walk. We found some lovely Pau shells.

Rarami - definitely more of a Maori influence in this part of the island. Lots of Maori art and stories to describe their history.

After checking into our motel we headed further north to Ohau Point where there is a sea lion colony. It's currently the season with loads of seal pups around. They were so cute 'running' around in little groups and jumping in and out of the water.

We spent quite a bit of time just watching them. They were quite entertaining tumbling about and leaping out of the water like dolphins.

As we near the end of our South Island tour we've still got quite a bit more to do. Amy and Freddie are off on a whale watching trip early tomorrow - Ian and I have seen quite a lot of dolphins and whales on our sailing adventures so we'll be having a coffee 😀. Then a walk around Kaikoura peninsula before we return to Christchurch for our last few nights.
