6 June Beginning Our Drive Home

And so our journey back to the UK started this morning with about 8.5 hours and 472 miles to cover until getting to our overnight stop in Beaulieu-Sur-Loire.

But before we could go anywhere, we had to make sure Margaret and her final lot of luggage would fit in the car!

Last night Margaret had trundled her well travelled suitcase over to us, which fortuitously fitted in the boot as we were minus 2 mattresses, a pram and several bags of linen from our outward journey. Definitely no room in the car for any extras - no duty free this time!

It was a bit cosy in the back with Margaret's final bags of momentos wedged in. But it was definitely more favourable than a flight back on Ryanair to the UK. It would have been a challenge in itself just to get it all to the airport single handedly 🤣.

With so much to chat about, the time flew by with our border crossing closely followed by a coffee and doughnut stop.

Before we knew it we were then 4 hours through our trip, driving through Milau with the impressive bridge on the horizon. Thankfully this time I didn't suffer with my previous ear problem, passing unscathed on the valley leg. Ears popping without any issue - yay!

Throughout our journey through France there are plenty of picturesque villages. This is the pretty little village of Aubiat spotted in the distance from the road north of Riom.

Tonight we stayed in the same place we stopped at for our overnight on the way down. This time we'd brought coffee with us to use with the machine. However, it wasn't as simple to operate as we'd hoped, resulting in us having to make do with instant coffee when it didn't work. Maybe we'll have more success on our next visit.

We took Margaret for a potter around the village before going for our dinner at the same pizzeria as before (the only open eating establishment). As we had arrived at a decent hour we found the patisserie still open much to Margaret's delight. We took a look in and she's already earmarked a custard slice for her breakfast when it opens at 7am.

We had a delicious pizza dinner, with plenty leftover for our lunch tomorrow, followed by a movie and a spot of knitting.

My alarm is already set for 6.15 and then we plan to get going to Calais as soon as Margaret has bought her custard tart.
