26 August Pottering in Peebles

Being a Bank Holiday Monday it had to start raining but fortunately it was only a bit of drizzle on our cross country journey to Peebles. Highland coos (not cows!) on one side and gambolling sheep on the other as we wound our way through the windy route.

Some lovely views from the River Tweed bridge taking us into Peebles.

The original bridge spanning the River Tweed, was widened at the end of the 19th century.

Peter is standing under the original section and behind him you can see the 'new' bit which widened the bridge to allow pedestrians to walk safely and carriages to pass easily.

Peebles Old Parish church is a centre piece to the town. On the tower the town's three fish emblem is displayed.

It also had some lovely stain glass windows. This one shows what can be seen locally - we saw several heron on the river bank and the colourful wild flowers along our walk.

We walked about half way up the tower. Peter spotted this sign on our way - I just love the Scottish language 😄.

After coffee (or hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream if you're Peter) and cakes, we visited the ruins of an older church in the town. Peebles Cross Kirk was built at the end of the 15th century and is steeped in history.

Peter tried, unsuccessfully, to find a 4 leaf clover.

The River Tweed is well known for its salmon fishing with the fish featured in the town's emble. A lovely example of it was on one of the pub signs.

Love the sense of humour of one of the town's pubs.

We considered doing a tree top walk at a nearby GoApe but decided that the 2-3 hour adventure would be best to organise on another day. So we returned to Whitburn for a walk in Polkemmet Country Park before we headed out for an early dinner.

A recently fallen tree on our walk. There have been several days of heavy rain and strong winds which could've caused its demise.

Sadly this has been my last day after my lovely week up here in central Scotland. Definitely looking forward to my next trip north of the border.

I start my journey towards Kent via a stop for a few days at Mum and Dad's tomorrow.
