26th November Bikes Returned

Well this morning we actually woke up to silence after the winds of the last 4 days. This was good news as we were running out of days to return the bikes. So as planned we headed off for the Olive Oil festival in Vilajuiga, a village about 2 miles further on than where the bikes had to go to.

Our route took us along the hiking/cycle paths that go across country. The surfaces of these vary from a smooth tarmac to very rustic - strewn with rocks, potholes and gravel. This made for some very bumpy riding at times which made me very glad that I was wearing a decent bra, otherwise my chest would've been resembling a Newton's Cradle!

As we approached the venue, Celler de Vilajuiga, we could hear music from a local Indie group - very good they were to. There was an opportunity to taste their olive oil and wines as part of l'esmorzar.

Getting our esmorzar.

After watching the locals prepare it we followed suit. The toasted bread is first spread with a garlic butter, a ripe tomato is then rubbed over the bread and drizzled with the oil.

We were very British and also sliced our tomato to go on top, rather than leave a mushed tomato to go in the bin.

Served with 3 sorts of grilled sausage and a glass of wine in a glass we could keep.

After our esmorzar we looked around and came across the tasting area. Huge vats of different wines to sample - seemed sensible to start one end and work our way through them as we weren't driving (thought we'd be ok for the mile ride to the next village return the bikes).

In the shop we came across people were very serious about their olive oil. They were loading their shopping trollies up with gallon containers of the stuff. At €35 it must be good stuff!

We successfully got the bikes back to Chris and Lorraine's garden. This involved pushing them up a very steep hill to their apartment entrance and then navigating several flights of steps around the back to their garden. The bees were very busy in the blossom - just seemed a bit odd seeing them so late in the year.

After leaving the bikes we then started on the 2 hour walk back. At least it was warm and sunny on our journey so we enjoyed one of our last days in shorts.

Catching up on the last few hours of the afternoon sunshine. We won't be doing this when we get back.

Tomorrow will definitely be packing up day and the freezer desperately needs defrosting. And as we're on the last few items in the fridge for dinner we'll be eating out tomorrow - if we can find somewhere open! I'll let you know how successful we were tomorrow 😁.
