4th October Pottering Round Peralada

Today we took a tour out to the town of Peralada, north of Castello d'Empuries where we walked to along the River Muga about a week ago. I only suggested going there after a search on Google maps indicated that there was a castle and some churches. Something to keep us busy for the morning.

About a 20 minutes journey got us there and we parked near the town's winery. The wines here are apparently well renowned in Spain. Then we headed into the town centre following signs for our first stop at the Tourist Information centre. Here we were furnished with a town map highlighting the heritage route which made it much easier for us to see everything.

We managed to see everything on our walk from the original town gateways, to a castle, fountains and churches. Unfortunately as we went around we discovered that the majority only open in July and August.

I think this is the equivalent of Harry Potter's Platform 9 3/4 - we didn't see anyone disappearing through the wall but then we're muggles πŸ˜….

The castle is now privately owned and houses a Michelin star restaurant and a casino!

What did Ian spot?

Somewhere to sit and hold a balloon.

Iglesia de Sant MartΓ de Peralada - this has a Roman baptismal font that I had hoped to see. Sadly the door was locked so maybe next time it'll be open.

A view showing the church tower which couldn't be seen when we were close to it. The yellow shape on top is in support of Catalonian independence - we're in Catalonia the north east of Spain.

Pomegranates - never ripe.

A bit of a rickety bridge across the dried out riverbed. I let Ian go first πŸ˜€.

On the look out for pandas as we went through what seemed to be a bamboo forest.

We have no idea what this fruit is.

The snail apocalypse. For some reason we've been spotting snails clinging to walls, poles or anything that's not greenery where we thought they'd be. We'll have to find out why.

All in all a good visit to Peralada and somewhere we'd go back to. Maybe by walking along the river from another nearby town.

Tomorrow we'll see how what takes our fancy as to whether we stay local or potter out. Tonight it's going to be a Strictly catch up.
