21st August Cilgerran Castle Visit

Not a bad start to the day - it was initially dry! So we decided on going out for a jolly.

Co-ordinates put into the sat nav and we were off in Rolo with the roof down. Then it was up (started to drizzle), then down (rain stopped and getting too warm) 😅. And the roof has been up and down like that every time we drove today.

Anyway, we managed to park fairly near to Cilgerran Castle.  This 13th-century fortress is perched overlooking the Teifi Gorge just a few miles from Cardigan. English Heritage membership got us in for free, as despite the castle belonging to National Trust it's a Cadw property which meant we couldn't use one of our NT vouchers today. We can use it another day this week.

Enjoyed our clamber up the towers.

Cilgerran Castle

A wicker work of William Marshal who took over ownership of the castle in the early 13th century. He then converted it's construction from wood to local slate.

We took a meander along the River Teifi looking out for local kingfishers and otter. Unfortunately none spotted.

A caterpillar hedge creation 😃

After our walk around the little Cilgerran village we stopped off for some lunch before taking the coast road to Gwbert. Here the River Teifi exits into the sea with Poppit Sands across the mouth of the estuary. The rather dreary day didn't show the view off to it's full potential - disappointing for a late August summer's afternoon.  But still pretty spectacular.

On our return to the van we nipped into buy some damp traps ready for when we winterize the van (as they'll probably be sold out when we want them in November). Then a stop for our daily coffee and read of the papers (did you see the article and photo about the Thresher shark off New Quay on Friday?), before leaving in the rain back for dinner. And since then it seems to have been raining all evening.

Nothing as yet planned for tomorrow so a surprise day in store!
