26th July Carlingford Lough

Left Drogheda at about 11am so we had plenty of water under the keel on our 5 mile meander back along the River Boyne.

Out in the Irish Sea we were pleasantly surprised that the wind was in a position that enabled us to sail! So at times we were steaming along at 5 knots and other times we were bopping about waiting for the wind to pick up but we persevered.

Ian got the mackerel lines out and managed to catch 3 today. Kept one for my dinner 😋.

It wasn't the warmest of days but probably a typical summer day sailing in Ireland.

Keeping warm! I am smiling 😁

We didn't want to get to the entrance of Carlingford Lough too early as we needed to enter at low water, or after the tide turned, to be going in with the flow of water. Apparently it's impossible against the 5 knot tide when it's coming out.

Mountains in the distance - about 15 miles to go to Carlingford Lough

We were very pleased to have timed our sail perfectly (well Ian had planned it perfectly 😊). Even getting into the Carlingford harbour was perfection as it's a drying harbour so we needed to make sure we had enough water to get in. We slowly touched bottom as we went alongside the harbour wall but as the tide was coming in it wasn't a problem. We'll dry out when the tide goes out so early hours of the morning Anya will be on the sand.

Our overnight view - King John's castle on right

Tomorrow we'll have a potter around Carlingford village before we head out on the rising tide. Probably go up to Warrenpoint up at the top of the lough.
