17 July A Perfect Day

Despite the slightly iffy weather at the start of my 60th birthday celebrations I've had a fabulous day 😊.

The boat was decked out in birthday bunting and balloons, with a bottle of bubbly already chilling.

All my favourite flavours for my birthday muffins - lemon, caramel and chocolate. Delicious!

A bit of a novelty for this trip. Brandwood Tunnel is a fairly decent length of 322m.

Our first challenge was finding the headlight switch! Until it was located we had to rely on Freddie's phone torch.

We had another boat following us but luckily no one coming towards us - it would've been a tight squeeze.

Passing beneath an old guillotine lock - aptly named.
Once we got through the other side we had to make a tricky 90 degrees turn under a bridge to join the Worcester and Birmingham canal.

Our planned stop this morning was at Bournville. Just as we were approaching the mooring there was a horrible crunchy, clangy noise. A 'something's round the prop' sort of noise. On investigation we had picked up a car tyre!!

A much happier face once it was removed.

Then we started our trip into Bournville, home of Cadbury's.

No vacancies - we checked 🤣.

Everything is very purple - even the lamp posts and bollards.

Morning coffee to wash down some very chocolatey treats.

We enjoyed a treasure hunt around Bournville discovering all sorts of places you wouldn't normally see. The Cadbury brothers encouraged their staff to learn to swim in working hours!

Then it was a stop off in the Cadbury's factory shop for the obligatory bag of Mishapes before it was back on board for a short chug up river for our evening stop. We moored alongside the university accommodation in Selly Oak and a short walk to a selection of restaurants. Nandos for dinner and more chocolate for pud so had to have another walk before bed!!

I managed to break a sandal a few days ago.

Cinderella could go to the ball! I bought some rather snazzy replacements in the Mountain Warehouse near Sainsbury's with some birthday money.

Tomorrow we'll start on our route in the Worcester direction.
