10 August Pottering and Pests

This morning we were awoken to a half hearted attempt at Riverdance on the roof by a couple of lack lustre sea gulls. Then we had the pitter patter of rain. Yes we were probably the only area in the UK to experience rain today - last night's forecast showing a small blob of blue (rain)in our part of Wales while the rest of the UK basks in sunshine. We can vouch for the fact that we were in that blue patch!

Anyway it gave me a bit of time to make a start on beaks for my ducks and Ian looked into our European breakdown cover for our next trip to Spain.

By midday the rain had stopped and the sun was making an effort to break through the clouds. Time to make a break for it!

Driving up over the hills to Aberaeron there was a significant amount of sea fog. However as we dropped down to sea level it became much clearer.

Ian hadn't seen the work that's going on in Aberaeron as the sea defences are strengthened.

As there's currently no access to the harbour on the normal crabbing wall (other side) all crabbing activities are now taking place near the sailing club.

Unfortuately the work on the sea defences have caused a few incidents due to poor marking and buoys. This yacht has damaged the rudder (the bit broken off is on the floor by the right keel) and the bow was damaged. Facebook has a video of a yacht which had the RNLI out to rescue it as it had gone on the rocks/new defence about a month ago.

Fish and chips for lunch. Sadly not with the normal picturesque view across the harbour.

Looking at the plans we worked out that there is a barrier that raises when floods are likely which then stores in the footpath around the harbour. Be interesting to see it finished and in action.

An after lunch chill on the beach before we drove up to the Owners Lounge for a coffee and read of today's papers.

We had an unexpected visitor while we sat in the balcony. An Asian Hornet (we think) so we've reported it on the Asian Hornet app with the picture to help with identification.

Late afternoon has been spent sitting outside reading. Entertained by a group of youngsters on their bikes and scooters as they whizz up and down past the van. Then after our evening's Olympics fix we went in search of shooting stars. There's a meteor shower going overhead over the next few days as the Perseid meteor shower is visible. We pottered down to the beach where we spent a pleasant half an hour or so lying on our backs watching the sky. It was a lovely clear sky so we spotted quite a few shooting stars and tried to identify the constellations (I think we need to do a bit of work on our star identifications). It was quite pleasing to spot a shooting star 😀.
