15th May Girona Flower Festival

Today we've spent the day in the walled city of Girona, about 50 minutes south west of us. We've been following a suggested route wandering around looking at the 80+ displays in the week long Flower Festival.

As the morning and early afternoon were dry we enjoyed the majority of the displays without having to dash for cover. This was one of the 3 pedestrian bridges that cross the river into the main part of the city.

Viewing portals were left open for views of the cathedral.

Every display was different. These incorporated dried flowers like an open umbrella along the street.

All along the road sides and around the trees there were flowers and displays.

A very colourful display on the Red Bridge.

One whole street was allocated to displays made by the local primary schools.

There was even a small display in the river.

The house had different characters depicting a Catalan tale.

Displays were inside a variety of buildings as well as in the streets.

The city monuments were used to incorporate displays.

Homemade flowers were used in displays as well as fresh and dried.

Private gardens were also open for visitors to see their displays.

Courtyards in council buildings were used. It looked like it was open house everywhere!

Several small chapels which aren't normally open had lovely aromatic displays.

In one of the squares there was a tower representing the local castellar groups (they build towers out of people - climbing on shoulders). Something we've still got to see.

We came across a collection of the giants. These are carried in the local carnivals.

There were loads!

They were in all shapes and sizes - we couldn't believe how many there are. We knew most towns have them as we've seen the ones in Castello d'Empuries.

Steps up to the churches were made use of - this one had an 'apple' tree display.

Different countries and themes were represented in a floral display - the Provence.

Caves in the city walls had some creative displays using different lighting.

I think a local was getting a bit fed up of the number of tourists 😅.

The steps up to the cathedral were used to make music - I wonder what it sounds like. And then it started to rain!

Luckily there was a display in the History Museum so it was free entry for everyone. We love a freebie!

It made an ideal shelter when we had a hail storm and a thunderstorm.

When the rain eventually stopped we headed back across the river towards the car park. Another otter sighting.

While the one in the river stopped to eat a fish we also spotted one on the bank. There must be quite a few that live on this section of the river.

Anyway, we eventually returned back to the apartment by 7pm, after stopping off for a bit of a grocery shop.

This evening's sunset. Maybe we're in for a nicer day tomorrow.
