9th March Mary and a Market

I keep meaning to take a photo of this. I know we're in Australia but .... 🤔!!

A busy day exploring today. First stop Marlborough, the birthplace of P.L.Travers, author of Mary Poppins.

I was trying to borrow her brolly! This is outside the bank where P.L. Traver's father worked and she was born.

We found out from our meanderings that many of the things in the Mary Poppins story originated from here e.g. a cannon is fired once a week on market day.

They're very pro Mary.

We were wondering what the figures are for traffic incidents caused by tourists trying to take photos of the lights 😂.

Then it was a trip to the loo - Cistern Chapel loos. They play classical music while you contemplate.

When the council renovated the loos they decided to make them the best in Australia. Since opening after lockdown in May 2022 they've had over 175,000 visitors to see them so a real boost to the local economy.

Panoramic view from the other loo.

Even the family room has been decked out with Mary Poppins.

While the gents were empty Amy and I checked out the decor.

Prefered the ladies.

The men had the historical decor.

After our cultural loo break and a cuppa we drove on to Uranguan. Initially for the market but as it was packing up early due to the blustery conditions we walked along the pier.

It was originally built for the ships coming in to collect/deliver but is now a walking and fishing spot. A few thousand steps added to today's walking total.

Lunch was had a bit further up the shoreline having dodged a rainstorm and found some dry seats under cover. We were joined by quite a few ibis birds keen for crumbs.

This afternoon we experienced our first Australian gravel road. Definitely more comfortable in a 4 wheel drive in comparison to the cars we drove in NZ.

This evening we're in Bundaberg with a tour of the ginger beer establishment lined up for tomorrow.
