6th March Zoo Day

After yesterday's encounter with a spider in the park we're pretty sure we've identified it as a Silver Orb spider. Well it fits the descriptions we found and are known for making their webs between trees.

Today we've continued our wildlife theme by visiting Australia Zoo (Steve Irwin zoo). A national hero, Steve was sadly killed by a stingray in 2006 but his legacy lives on through his family and the amazing work they do at the zoo. They're at the forefront in conserving species, work around the world, education and  through the animal rescue work done in the hospital.

Ian and I were half dressed in the khaki zoo gear. Just need the shirts and we'd be mistaken for staff!

For those of you who ever watched the Steve Irwin documentaries as the 'Crocodile Hunter's or snake catcher one of his phrases was 'Crikey!'. They have even got the Crikey Cafe at the zoo.

Throughout the day there were talks on different animals. The first one we got to was on turtles having managed to arrive by 9.45am after our hour and half drive.

We loved the koala nursery - they're so cute even when they're asleep.

My close encounter.

Amy got to stroke one! She said it was quite soft.

More encounters.

This time Ian got up close.

Eeekk!!

One of our favourites of the day was an Echnidna - never heard of it before. Like a cross between and anteater and a hedgehog.

Luckily not the real thing😂. We did see a crocodile feeding exhibition in the Crocoseum with colourful birds flying around the arena as well. Crocodile feeding was one of the things Steve Irwin was well known for.

After a quick sneak peak into the hospital on our way out to see some of the many sick and injured animals we've continued our journey northwards. Tin Can Bay for the next few nights.
