13th March Sugar Shack

Well last night ended up being interesting. We ended up in an outback 'hotel' frequented by frogs and crickets!

We knew they were outside our door as in the lights when it was dark there were loads of bugs and mozzies. Ideal snacks for frogs.

What we hadn't appreciated was that the frogs could squeeze under our door! So later in the evening, after we'd successfully got rid of the bugs, by having our room lights off, leaving our room door open and allowing them to fly out to the hallway light, we noticed a frog hopping along the side of the room. After we'd managed to corner it, it was despatched outside along with a cricket that had creeped in as well. The gap under the door was wedged with towels so we didn't have repeat visits during the night. I didn't fancy standing on one during my nightly trip to the loo 😀.

Anyway breakfast was at Flaggy Rock Cafe (worth visiting just for the name) before we continued our drive up Bruce Highway to Sarina. Here we stopped off at the Sugar Shack to find out about the local sugar industry.

Our visit included opportunities for tastings. They call it Fairy Floss over here!

Then we had a whole range of sauces, chutnies, jams and alcoholic beverages to sample as well. I rather liked the beetroot chutney and the Butterscotch liqueur.

We had plans to stop in Mackay but we unfortunately we had problems with our accommodation. An email had been sent inferring that they couldn't take payment and that we'd lose our accommodation. As it looked like a scam we tried calling but got either a voicemail or wrong number. This did not make it easy for us to confirm with the hoteliers as to what was going on. So we decided to head straight there, missing out on swimming in the Blue Lagoon in Mackay - you can't swim in the sea with crocs and stingers. I was not impressed!

Anyway we managed to get into our cabin without any coconuts falling on the car (loads scattered at the bottom of the coconut trees and along the roads) and went exploring.

Definately no swimming here.

According to a local even the stinger net holes aren't small enough to keep all the stingers out so no way am I going in the sea. You need to be wearing a protective stinger suit - not something I packed 😄.

Pack at the cabin we've been collecting coconuts.

The wheel brace from the car has been useful in getting the outer husk off.

Three coconuts ready for tasting this evening.

Tomorrow we're off to Bowen and plan to go to Airlie on the way.
