14th March Swimming in Airlie

After a leisurely start to the day for the rest of the family (I was up at 8am and we were only just ready to leave by 10am!) and having checked our road conditions for today (all good to go) we headed for Airlie Beach.

With a kangaroo waving us off in a field as we passed by (quite exciting as we've not seen one for a few days) we had a good journey. I can't say smooth as our route took us on a 15km gravel road which seemed to be mostly pot holes. Ian was getting a bit anxious about the possibility of getting a flat and having to replace a tyre!

Anyway Airlie is supposed to be the gateway to the Barrier Reef, popular with cruise ships (one out at anchor and P&O labelled travellers spotted in the high street) and backpackers. The beach was a bit disappointing as it didn't look like it had been cleaned of leaf debris for sometime and the sand looked like it's imported as it was too yellow in comparison to the colour of the sand in the sea.

With the jelly fish stinger warnings on the beach we also gave it a wide berth and settled for swimming in the lagoon pool nearby. It's a free facility with life guards where it's safe to swim without worrying about being bitten by wildlife.

We had a lovely dip before lunch and a potter around.

Tonight we're another hour's drive north in Bowen. Our beachfront unit is right on the seafront so I'll be dragging Ian off for a walk before it  starts to gets dark at about 6.30pm. It also means I'm out of the cool air conditioning - it gets too cold for me. I'm the one in a jumper in the evening while everyone else is sweltering 😂.
