14th February Kai Iwi Lakes

Happy Valentine's day to you all. We also celebrated Pancake day (a day late) by having pancakes for our breakfast. This was despite my attempts to throw most of the ingredients on the floor when the lid came off the flour. Amazing how far flour spreads on a wood planked floor.

All the ingredients necessary for a successful Valentine's day. (Swimming stuff, suncream, shades and chocolates - to be eaten after our day out as they'd go a bit soft on the beach 😄).

We ventured out today to Kai Iwi lakes - nearly had the beach to ourselves today.

It's about a half hour drive up the coast from us. Taking the coast road there (all gravel roads, but part of the appeal of NZ is going off the beaten track - although our little Hyundai may not be the most suitable of vehicles). Our return journey took us on the less treacherous tarmaced main road and reduced the travel time by a third.

The lake has fantastic turquoise water and white shallow sands around the edge. This then suddenly shelves to 30m deep! Amy and Freddie went for a dip while Ian and I just enjoyed the ambience (had a snooze 😄)!

Mid afternoon the cloud cover was increasing and it was getting a bit breezy by the lake so we headed back to the bach. An evening relaxing and then tomorrow we're driving south to my sister's. Should arrive late afternoon. We're all looking forward to seeing the NZ side of the family as Amy hasn't seen her cousins for 16 years!
