Right by our parking spot was Tourist Information and the Museo de la Anchoa y la Sal (Anchovy and Salt Museum) so we popped in to get a map and found out it was the annual Anchovy Festival day. So we thought we'd go and see what that was about as the celebration was based in a small bay on our walk to L'Escala. I also discovered there is a salt festival in September - something for next year's visit.
There was a sectioned off area where anchovy preparation was going on. It looked like this salt cured delicacy was being prepared by being put on slices of baguette. We assumed that as tickets were being sold that as part of the celebration these would be fed to the gathering crowds. I also found out that an anchovy is a fish in its own right - I always thought it was a salted sardine. It's apparently smaller than a sardine and salted rather than being preserved in oil like a sardine.
As we walked along the sea front we could see that there was going to be a formal bit to the celebration as there was seating and a podium. This is when the Golden Anchovy is awarded to someone or an organisation who has promoted anchovies over the last year.
Guess what we also came across ... a market! Now we have a couple of options for a market on a Sunday. Although they really are all selling much the same thing so we didn't spend much time looking.
Ian spotted a sinking boat in the bay at L'Escala. We later found out that it sank in August and they're waiting for it to be moved.
On the outskirts of the town we came across the public washing place. Not for bathing but for clothes.
On our way back to the car we discovered a bike tool station. It opens in a similar manner to a shopping trolley lock so you get your 50c coin or token back.
We had to have a look. All the tools there, including a pump. The bike for repair looks like it's hung on the yellow bars sticking out near Ian's head.
After our day out exploring we were back to the apartment late afternoon. Time for a cold drink and a nap 😀.
Not sure about tomorrow's plans but I'm sure we'll stay local after our day out.
