Our day started with a drive to Figueres to Castell de Sant Ferran - the biggest fort in Europe. Here we were met by our guide who was brilliant. A full on history lesson, jokes and views on the wars in Spain and information about the fort.
The fort covers 33 hectares so our tour involved a ride in a 1970 Land Rover to get us around the perimeter.
Then we had to don some natty helmets with lights to first go searching a network of tunnels. In these tunnels the soldiers were on guard for 8 hour stints to listen out for the enemy who may potentially be digging tunnels. They were again used to go down into the underground water storage. In 1752 when the fort was built 4 huge underground tanks were put in to ensure there was enough water for 4,000 men, 450 horses for at least a year.
Judt a small section of it. Walls were at least 2 metres thick and the roofs designed to withstand cannon fire.
After our land and water based trip we headed home for the afternoon. Ian and Paul headed out for a snorkel while Kate and I chilled out with a book on the balcony. Then 4.30pm we were out again.
This time it was bowling - 16 of us from the Brits group we met up for lunch last week. After 2 games I ended up being the highest scoring lady 🥳.
We came away with an invite for coffee next week and potentially a couple of bikes (more on that tomorrow). As we didn't finish sh until gone 7.30pm we had dinner out.
Our normal dinner haunts of La Cassola and La Bola are closed on Wednesdays so we tried out a new restaurant. We liked this one in Santa Margarita square, so I envisage a return visit.
We couldn't decide on tomorrow's adventure so we'll decide at breakfast time.
