2nd February A Waterfall Day

This morning we woke to rain which stayed with us on and off during most of the day. However, being in holiday mode we were undeterred and dug out our anoraks and kept the shorts on (less material to get wet and dry out).

We were heading on the Scenic highway to Invercargill with lots of stops on route. First stop being the supermarket which was now open - bread being the main necessity for our picnic lunch.

Stocked up for the day we had a short drive to Purakaunui Falls. A relatively short walk to the falls and the rain was just a drizzle, so a good start to our waterfall day. All happy bunnies!

Then on to Matai Falls which also had Horseshoe Falls nearby so 2 for the price of 1!

We stopped for a coffee at a bizarre cafe. It had a little gallery in a bus with lots of mechanical games and models to play with.

If you did push the button you got squirted with water as Freddie found out 😄.

Trying out some of the activities.

Next stop was a walk across Tautuku Estuary walkway. The tide was out but there were a few birds to be seen.

One of the many 'off road' roads that we navigated today. This time 2km to get to Cathedral Caves. We then had a half hour walk through Maori owned forests to the beach.

We were lucky to arrive at Cathedral Caves at low tide so we didn't get our feet wet.

The first cave connected to a second cave with its entrance further up the beach and into the sea.

Second entrance - more of a paddle

The entrepid explorers.

Not having enough of the wet stuff and walks our final walk of the day (for most of us - Ian stayed with n the car for a nap) was to McLean falls.

By far the most impressive of our day.

We ended our day's journey through blue skies and sunshine. Although the wind is picking up this evening. Staying in the Coachman's Inn in Invercargill for the night before going to Manapouri in Doubtful Sound tomorrow.
