First an update on penguin spotting last night. We were successful! This time we were appropriately clothed so kept warm and knew not to get there before it started getting dark. We persevered and they came scampering out across the path in between Friendly Bay and the main beach.
You can just make out 2 little blue penguins. They're only 40cm tall! Peeping to their parents coming in from the sea.
Leaving our accommodation by 10am we headed back into Oamaru for the morning.
The main streets in the town have impressive limestone buildings. An abundant and durable material used at the time they were constructed.
The town is overflowing with steampunk shops - if you've never heard of steampunk it's a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with features inspired by science fiction.
Steampunk HQ is based in Oamaru. It's full of creations made from bits of vehicles, tools, anything metal and noisy.
After finishing at Steampunk HQ we went in search of this sign that we'd seen featured on many of the Oamaru postcards.
Dunedin is home to Baldwin Street which holds the record for being the world's tallest street. It doesn't look much in this picture but our hire car would definitely struggle getting up it and I'm not sure I'd want to cycle down it 😄.
We're staying in Leith Park Holiday park tonight. No penguins to visit tonight but glow worms to hunt out in the park. So much for an early night!
