Anyway, after managing to get through check in with only my bag having to be checked (I'd managed to leave a tiny bottle of perfume in my bag instead of putting it in the clear plastic bag that you're supposed to) we headed to the airport Weatherspoons. You just have to make the most of the unlimited coffees before boarding.
Our flight was on time and we ended up with a free seat by us. Plenty of room to spread out on our 4 hour 30 minutes flight.
We arrived in the rain but fairly warm at about 14C. Our rental car agent collected us and we were soon off in our small 5 door Toyota.
Our route took us on the motorway from Larnaca to Ayia Napa which was pretty straightforward until we started driving into AN. The rain got harder and there was water rushing and gushing everywhere. Man holes were bubbling up where the drains couldn't cope with the amount of water.
We noticed the roads were starting to get overwhelmed by the volume of water. On arriving at the first main roundabout we had to grind to a halt to navigate the water and pebble/rubble debris washed across the road.
Where did all those rocks come from?
Anyway, we managed to find our apartment and met our host Costas. After being shown around (didn't take long as it's a studio apartment 😁), we ventured out again in search of the local Lidl.
Well, what an adventure! A.N. seems to be a maze of one way streets, with the majority currently closed due to flooding and debris. As we ended up going round in circles several times we decided to ignore a road closed sign (as the locals were). However, we had to do a manoeuvre in a flooded road to turn round when there was a landslide and part of the road washed away!
Back into the one way system and it felt like we couldn't get out of town (probably because I was trying to navigate using my Google maps). So Ian flagged down a passing police car and explained our dilemma. They were great. Taking pity on a couple of deranged British tourists lost in the roads of A.N. they told us to follow them out.
It was quite a relief to be out! So onwards to Lidl where we stocked up on food for a few days as the forecast doesn't look to be much improved until Tuesday. At least we are out of the rain, have Wi-Fi, a TV, books to read and I have some sewing😁. Loads to keep us occupied, although hopefully it'll have a dry spell sometime tomorrow for us to have a look around locally.
Surely it can't get any worse 🤣
